FIRST ANNUAL FEMINIST FILM FESTIVAL
/—article by Bianca Betancourt @bybiancabee
Almost every industry is if not male run, male dominated, and the film industry makes no exception.
Sundance and Cannes are great for celeb spotting and pre-electing Oscar nominees, but aside from weekly best dressed lists, women filmmakers are hardly at the forefront of yearly cinema festivities.
That’s what make the news of the first annual Feminist Film Festival, taking place in downtown Chicago later this month, so refreshing.
The two-day festival will feature an all independent line up of 42 different female-fronted films from filmmakers all over the world, of multiple genres covering the supporting arch subjects of inequality: gender, race and sexuality.
The opening night on April 21st will highlight the feature film “The Fits” by Anna Rose Holmer followed by an evening reception to kick off the festival. Every film showcased will be followed by a Q&A conversation with the films’ respective directors.
The Feminist Film Festival will take place Thursday April 21st and Friday April 22nd at Columbia College Chicago’s Film Row Cinema (1104 S. Wabash Avenue). The festival is free and open to the public. For more information head to chicagofeministfilmfestival.com.
