A principios de julio, Ruido Fest agitó el predecible panorama de los festivales en Chicago, y trajo a Pilsen un fin de semana entero de propuestas musicales de la escena alternativa Latina. El festival tuvo una mayoría de artistas de lengua hispana, entre ellos algunos clásicos como Molotov, Café Tacvba o Kinky, así como multitud de actuaciones de otros nombres menos conocidos, aunque no por ello menos interesantes. 

Una de las actuaciones más destacadas fue la simbólica presencia de Dellarge en Addams/Meddil Park, un Michoacano de larga melena que combinó a la perfección los sonidos del Chicago House, Detroit techno y disco para unos fans en trance. En un sentido musical y espiritual, Dellarge estaba como en su propia casa. 

Tuvimos/tuvo la oportunidad de conversar con él tras su exitoso dj-set.

Earlier this month, Ruido Fest shook up a crowded, predictable Chicago music festival scene and provided Pilsen with a full weekend of Latin American Alternative powerhouses. The predominantly Spanish language music event had iconic acts such as Molotov, Café Tacvba, and Kinky as well as countless incredible performances from lesser known acts here in the States.

One performance particularly struck a symbolic presence that echoed across Addams/Medill Park. Dellarge, a long haired Michoacano from México masterfully blended the nostalgic sounds of Chicago House, Detroit techno, and elements of disco for a crowd of entranced listeners. In a musical and spiritual sense, Dellarge was home.

We sat down for a conversation with Dellarge after his set.
 

¿Esta es tu primera vez en Chicago?
Is this your first time in Chicago?

D : Si, es mi primera vez en Chicago, ya había tocado algunas veces aquí en EE.UU. pero en Nueva York y en Los Ángeles. La verdad es que mis influencias son el Chicago House y el Detroit Techno. Me encantó venir a Chicago para tocar house, pues es aquí donde nació realmente. Aquí empezaron los precursores como Frankie Knuckles. Me encantó venir a Chicago a poner la música que pongo y que la gente la disfrute. Eso fue bellísimo.

Yes, it’s my first time in Chicago, but I’ve played in the United States before in New York and L.A. My biggest influences are Chicago House and Detroit Techno. I loved coming to Chicago to play House music because this is where it all truly started. The forefathers, like Frankie Knuckles, all started here. I loved coming to Chicago to play what I always play and see everyone enjoy it. That was beautiful.
 

¿Empezaste a tocar House music en México?
Did you first start playing House music in Mexico?

D : Bueno, realmente, yo viví en Londres unos años y luego en Barcelona unos seis o siete años. Y allí es donde empecé a tocar en fiestas caseras y luego me fui a Nitsa club en España donde fui residente. Me encantó de tal manera que empecé a producir música y desde aquel momento me dediqué a esto.

Well, I lived in London for a few years and then Barcelona like 6 or 7 years, something like that. It was in those places where I started deejaying at house parties then I was a resident DJ at Nitsa Club in Spain. I loved doing that so much I started producing then I just started dedicating myself to the music from there.
 

Como tu habías comentado, aquí en Chicago y en Detroit nació la música House y el Techno, pero últimamente como que aquí no se escucha igual como antes. ¿Qué opinas?
You mentioned before that House music and techno were created and nurtured here in Chicago and Detroit, but lately there isn’t much interest in the genres as before. What are your opinions over the decline?

D : Si, claro, al final de cuentas, quieres que la gente baile pongas lo que pongas. Tocar un buen rato y que se divierta la gente. No se que tanto House escuche la gente, pero yo sé lo que significa para mi y eso es una diferencia muy grande.

Yeah, but, at the end of it all, you want people to dance no matter what you play. Play some music for a while and have people enjoy themselves. I don’t know how much House music people listen to, but I know what it means to me. That’s what makes the biggest difference.
 

¿Tienes planes para tocar otra vez en EE.UU?
Do you have any plans for more U.S. appearances?

D : Me encantaria. Con Silverio he tocado mucho. Yo toco primero y luego él, o él toca primero y luego yo después, allí vamos uno por uno. Hemos tocado sobre todo en Europa porque allá últimamente la música electrónica está más de moda. Sin embargo, cada vez nos tratan mejor aquí en EE.UU. y queremos venir cada vez que podamos. 

I’d love to. I’ve played quite a bit with Silverio. I open then he goes one or I’ll play first then he goes on. We’ll switch off. We’ve played the most in Europe because lately that’s where Electronic music is most popular. The more and more we have shows in the U.S; the more we’d like to do more shows there at every opportunity.
 

Si podias escoger a cualquier DJ/productor musical para colaborar con el, quien seria?
If you could choose any DJ/producer to collaborate with, who would it be?

D : A mí me encanta Andrew Weatherall. Weatherall es un deejay de Inglaterra que produce música muy interesante. Me encantaría colaborar con él.

I really like Andrew Weatherall. Weatherall is a producer from England with a very interesting sound. I’d love to collaborate with him.
 

Y qué es lo que sigue con tu música? Tienes planes de un nuevo disco?
Do you have any future projects in the works?

D : Si, estoy preparando un EP para sacar próximamente, se puede encontrar en Épico (epico.mx). Contiene House, techno, y disco. Va estar disponible en vinilo y formato digital.

Yes, I’m getting ready to release a new EP which you can find on Épico. It’ll have House music, Techno, and disco elements. It’ll be available as vinyl or digital formats.
